closely controlled. The multi-infarct group had an -intermediate mean plasma carotene concentration and showed no significant correlation between plasma carotene and plasma vitamin A concentrations (Spearman coefficient 0 32). These findings very probably result from including patients who also have Alzheimer's disease in the multi-infarct group.5 The cause of carotenaemia in Alzheimer's disease is unclear. Although there is considerable overlap with other groups, increased plasma carotene concentrations may be useful as a diagnostic criterion for Alzheimer's disease.

Comparison of Deferoxamine, Activated Charcoal, and Vitamin C in Changing the Serum Level of Fe in Iron Overloaded Rats
Background: Iron is an essential mineral for normal cellular physiology but its overload can lead to cell injury. For many years, deferoxamine injection has been used as an iron chelator for treatment of iron overload. The aim of this study is to compare oral deferoxamine, activated charcoal, and vitamin C, as an absorbent factor of Fe, in changing the serum level of iron in iron overload r...
متن کاملComparison of activated charcoal and sodium polystyrene sulfonate resin efficiency on reduction of amitriptyline oral absorption in rat as treatments for overdose and toxicities
Objective(s): Comparative in vivo studies were carried out to determine the adsorption characteristics of amitriptyline (AMT) on activated charcoal (AC) and sodium polystyrene sulfonate (SPS). AC has been long used as gastric decontamination agent for tricyclic antidepressants and SPS has showed to be highly effective on in-vitro drugs adsorption. Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley male rats...

Accidental Rivaroxaban Overdose in a Patient with Pulmonary Embolism: Some Lessons for Managing New Oral Anticoagulants
Rivaroxaban is an orally active direct factor Xa inhibitor used to treat venous thromboembolism with approved starting dose of 15 mg twice-daily. We present a case of an accidental overdose in a patient with pulmonary thromboembolism, when the patient received two 150 mg doses of rivaroxaban, instead of 15 mg as prescribed, given 12 hours apart. This error was recognised ten minutes after the s...
متن کاملFatal diltiazem overdose: report of four cases and review of the literature.
Four fatal cases of diltiazem overdose are described and compared with previously published cases. Clinical sequelae include all grades of heart block, hypotension and ultimately death. Management includes gastric lavage and oral administration of activated charcoal at presentation. Further symptomatic treatment with inotropic agents and temporary cardiac pacing may be required. If these measur...
